Katherine’s quest for a council chiefSOMETIMES crises politicise people. For Katherine Town Council Mayor Anne Shepherd, it was the 1998 floods – which shattered the remote Northern Territory town of 10,000 people – that showed her the power of advocacy and opened her eyes to a political future.

She’d long been interested in public affairs, as a nurse and board member of Katherine Hospital, where she started work in 1967, and as a chairwoman of various committees.

Calls for more women in the mining industryMORE women are being encouraged to consider a career in the traditionally male-dominated mining industry as the sector recognises the benefits of diversity in the workforce.

Employment Office Managing Director, Tudor Marsden-Huggins said there has been a trend towards recognising the value of the female gender in mining roles.

“In 2008, women accounted for just 10.4 percent of the mining industry and were recruited mainly for corporate and office roles,” the recruitment specialist said.
